Finland vs Latvia prediction
Finland
The Finnish national team, along with tournament hosts Switzerland and Austria, have maintained a flawless record in Group A at the World Hockey Championship after three rounds. Currently, the 'Suomi,' who have brought quite an impressive lineup led by Alexander Barkov (who missed the season in Florida due to a severe injury), look very formidable.
Following routine victories over Hungary (4-1) and Germany (3-1), the Finns dismantled the American team 6-2, capitalizing on the complete chaos in the 'Stars and Stripes' ranks. New Jersey prospect Leni Haminaaho's double was key in this game, while Anton Lundell sealed the final score early in the third period with a power-play goal.
Antti Pennanen's squad has been playing outstanding hockey at this tournament - their game is structured, disciplined, and they maintain high intensity in all areas of the ice. The team showcases excellent puck control, quick transitions between zones, a strong power play, and an elite goaltending level. Their roster depth (with all lines reinforced by NHL players) allows them to exert pressure throughout the entire match, regardless of the opponents' level. The only downside at the start of the tournament is the injury to Chicago forward Tero Teravainen, who is out for the rest of the tournament.
Latvia
The Latvian national team, led by Harijs Vitolins, has approached this tournament as a defensive squad relying on counterattacks and individual talents. One victory in three matches is not the result the Baltic team had hoped for.
However, their lineup is far from optimal, with only one NHL player (Sandis Vilmanis, who had a brief stint with Florida in the regular season). Significant losses for various reasons (Abols, Blugers, Girgensons, Balinskis, Silovs) have weakened the team's potential. They rely more on European league veterans, character, and strong goaltending.
This approach was evident in their initial matches against Switzerland (2-4), Germany (2-0), and Austria (1-3). Against Austria, the Baltic team needed to take more initiative but faltered, suffering a second consecutive group stage defeat to the red and whites. It will be even tougher against Finland.
Prediction
In my opinion, Latvia won't manage to score two goals in this match. The Finns are on the verge of securing an early playoff spot. The 'Suomi' lineup is significantly stronger, more skilled, faster, and experienced compared to Vitolins' team. An experienced and elite goaltending line enables the blue and whites to play very securely in defense (having conceded only four goals in three matches).
Considering Latvia's issues with positional attack and their very cautious style due to their limited roster, I doubt the favorites will concede two or more goals in this encounter.
