Juan Manuel recently gave it his all to reach the semifinals in Gstaad, only to heartbreakingly come up short of making it to the tournament's final. As a result, he missed out on defending the points he earned in last year's final in Switzerland. The Argentine fell victim to Raphael Collignon, losing to him for the first time in four matches (6-1, 6-7, 5-7). What made it even tougher to swallow was that in the decisive set, Cerundolo Junior was leading 5-2 and was just two points away from winning, but couldn't close out the match in his favor. It seems that he ran out of steam, as all four of his matches in Gstaad were hard-fought three-set battles, but he faltered at the crucial moment against Collignon. Competing in Austria after this setback won't be easy, especially since his first-round opponent is a seasoned and persistent player.

Marco Trungelliti is a seasoned Argentine player (35+ in age) who thrives on clay courts. A moderately resilient and enduring athlete, he currently holds the 99th spot in the rankings. Last week, he put up a solid performance in Umag, managing to defeat Kyrian Jacquet at the tournament's outset (2-0), although he subsequently lost to Davidovich Fokina (0-2). Overall, the more experienced Argentine has had considerably more time to recover post-Croatia and gear up for this mountainous tournament, which should positively influence the proceedings of this match.
Prediction
This is the first direct face-off between these compatriots, and I'm putting my money on age and experience by backing the underdog with a plus game handicap. As mentioned earlier, Marco is entering the game much fresher. Thanks to his towering height, he produces effective first serves, moves excellently across the court, and will be significantly better prepared functionally than his younger colleague. Cerundolo Junior took a hard blow in Gstaad from which it's tough to recover, physically and mentally, so I won’t rule out Trungelliti not only covering the game handicap comfortably but potentially sealing the match victory with his experience against Juan Manuel, who will struggle to regain his footing following the Swiss semifinal loss.
