Coquimbo Unido vs Universitario de Deportes prediction
Coquimbo Unido
The Chileans head into this match with a considerable psychological blow. First, they were heavily beaten 0-3 by Tolima in the Copa Libertadores, followed by a humiliating 1-3 loss against Colo-Colo in the domestic league. Just two matches and they've conceded six goals. For a team that aims to advance from the group phase, it's disastrous.
Colo-Colo absolutely torn them apart. They had 61% possession and 15 shots on target. Coquimbo appeared sluggish. Their passes don’t get through, with their passing accuracy ranking dead last in the tournament – 31st out of 32 teams. Zero counterattacks throughout the group stage. Absolute zero.
Also, things aren't exactly rosy within the team. Goalkeeper Diego Sanchez, their main leader, took to social media to calm the fans down. He said something like "when it seems all is lost, don't give up." Indeed, when a captain feels the need to say such things, it’s a sign things are dire. Yes, they beat the Peruvians 2-0 in their first match. But that was back in April. Now, they look completely drained.
Universitario de Deportes
The Peruvians are a completely different story. They’re on a high. In their last match, they thrashed Juan Pablo II 4-1. Edison Flores bagged a brace, while Silveira and Farah completed the job. Before that, there was an incredible showdown with Nacional in the Libertadores – a 4-2 victory. Eight goals in their last two matches!
And there’s the coaching factor too. After Javier Rabanal stepped down, Jorge Araujo took the helm. And boom – three wins in four games. The team found balance. They've become more solid defensively and sharper in attack. Plus, they strengthened just before the transfer window closed. Bryan Reyna came in from Atletico Belgrano to add depth to the attack.
Their away record is simply excellent. They haven’t lost in 17 of their last 20 away matches. Their group is tough, with all four teams holding 4 points. Yet, in this form, the Peruvians look like favorites on any field.
Prediction
I can't understand those putting their money on Coquimbo to win here. Yes, it’s their home ground. But what does home advantage mean when you're conceding three goals a game? Their defensive skills are lacking, and opponents' xG stats against them are off the charts. Universitario are scoring enough to claw their way back and win.
The Copa Libertadores group stage is all about not losing. Everyone in the group has 4 points. A draw for the Peruvians is a good result, keeping them at the top. But considering how they’re attacking now, I don't believe they'll settle for a draw if they find gaps in the Chileans' defense.
The X2 bet at odds of 1.67 looks like a gift. It covers us for a Peruvian victory, which seems more than possible, and a draw, which is quite feasible in such a tightly contested group. Coquimbo is currently too psychologically weak to confidently outplay such a strong opponent.
