USA vs Switzerland prediction

Don Granato has a roster stacked with NHL players, but let's face it, the team lacks the shining stars it once had in previous Olympics. Without a doubt, Matthew Tkachuk from Florida is expected to lead the charge, but bringing home the gold with this lineup seems like a stretch.

However, we can't ignore the significant strides the USA team has made over the past year. Out of their last 18 games, they've only faced defeat once. This includes friendly matches against Germany, spread over a year, both turning out 5-2 in favor of the Americans.

The crowning achievement, naturally, is the Olympic gold that the team won in February. During the group stage, they defeated Latvia and Germany with a score of 5-1 and Denmark 6-3. In the playoffs, they narrowly edged out Sweden 2-1 in OT, crushed Slovakia 6-2 in the semifinals, and clinched the final against Canada with a 2-1 overtime victory.

Since changing coaches, the Swiss national team has struggled to consistently perform well. At the Olympics, they bested France 4-0, succumbed to Canada 1-5, and squeezed past the Czech Republic 4-3 in overtime. They managed a modest win over Italy 3-0 in the playoffs, but fell short against Finland in a 3-2 OT quarterfinal defeat.

In a series of friendlies with a squad similar to their current lineup but missing a few key players, Switzerland faced Slovakia with mixed results, losing 1-3 and winning 5-3, while thrashing Hungary twice with 6-1 victories. Arguably, not a stellar achievement.

During the two stages of the Eurotour, the Swiss only managed to defeat the Czechs twice and narrowly edged out Finland 5-4 in overtime. Overall, these tournaments weren't their best outings. With most players already back in the fold by then, expecting a major breakthrough in the upcoming tournament seems optimistic at best.
